Behold.so Review 2026: Pricing, Pros, Cons & Better Alternatives

FeedPane Team·February 24, 2026·8 min read

Behold is one of the most-discussed Instagram widget tools in developer circles. It's clean, well-documented, and developer-friendly. But it has one significant flaw that affects nearly every customer: view caps on every pricing tier.

Quick verdict

Behold is an excellent product for developers who want raw JSON API access. For non-technical users wanting a plug-and-play embed code, or for any site with meaningful traffic that will hit view caps, consider FeedPane instead.

What is Behold.so?

Behold is an Instagram feed API and widget service launched around 2020. It gained traction among developers for its clean API design, which lets you fetch your Instagram feed as JSON and build completely custom display implementations. They also offer pre-built widgets for non-developers.

The founder positioned Behold as a reliable alternative to the chaotic Instagram API ecosystem — and it largely delivered on that promise. The service is stable, the documentation is good, and the API is genuinely developer-friendly.

Free$01,00060
Starter$10/mo20,00060
Pro$20/mo100,000100
Scale$40/mo500,000Unlimited

Note: View caps are applied per feed widget. Exceeding the cap stops the feed from loading.

What Behold does well

1. The JSON API

Behold's standout feature is its clean JSON feed API. You authenticate your Instagram account, and Behold gives you a URL that returns your Instagram feed as structured JSON. You can fetch this with any language, in any custom implementation. For developers building custom Instagram displays — carousels, popups, server-side rendered pages, mobile apps — this is genuinely valuable.

2. Documentation and reliability

Behold's documentation is among the best in the space. The API is stable, responses are well-structured, and the team actively communicates changes. Developers who have built on Behold generally report a positive experience.

3. Widget appearance

Behold's pre-built widget has a clean, minimal design. The default grid looks professional and renders well across device sizes.

Where Behold falls short

1. View caps on every plan

This is the most significant issue. Every Behold plan has a monthly view cap — including paid plans. On the Starter plan ($10/mo), you're capped at 20,000 views. For a website with 2,000 monthly visitors where the average visitor loads 2 pages containing the widget, you're looking at 4,000 views per month. You'd blow past the free tier (1,000) immediately, and comfortably fit in the Starter tier.

But scale that website — say 20,000 monthly visitors — and you're at 40,000 views per month, pushing you into the $20/mo Pro plan. For a site with 100,000 monthly visitors, you'd need the Scale plan at $40/mo just to keep the widget running. The pricing scales with your success, which is a fundamentally different model than FeedPane's flat pricing.

2. No slider layout

Behold's pre-built widget only offers a grid layout. If you want a horizontal slider or carousel, you'd need to build it yourself using the JSON API. For non-developers, this is a blocker.

3. Branding on free plan

The free plan includes "Made with Behold" branding on the widget. FeedPane's free plan has no branding at all.

4. No annual billing option

Behold currently only offers monthly billing. FeedPane offers annual plans with 25% savings.

Who should use Behold?

  • Developers building custom Instagram displays who need clean JSON API access
  • Low-traffic websites where view caps aren't a concern
  • Teams that prioritise API stability over feature breadth

Who should look at alternatives?

  • Non-technical users who need a plug-and-play widget without API knowledge
  • Sites with growing traffic who don't want costs to scale with page views
  • Anyone who wants a slider layout without custom development work
  • Shopify merchants wanting native shoppable product tagging

Behold alternatives in 2026

If Behold's view caps are a concern, consider:

  • FeedPane — Flat pricing, unlimited views on paid plans, grid + slider layouts, lightbox, Reels support. Free plan has unlimited views and no branding.
  • Mintt Studio (Instafeed) — Best option specifically for Shopify stores. 300K+ installs, flat pricing, Shopify-only.
  • Smash Balloon — WordPress-specific, feature-rich plugin with no view caps.
